Great news! On November 6th, President Obama signed an extension and expansion of the first-time homebuyers credit. The maximum $8,000 credit will now be in effect through June. Homebuyers must sign a contract before April 30 and close by June 30. The income limits were also raised. Single buyers can now earn up to $125,000 and still get the full credit while married couples can earn up to $225,000.
The bill also added a tax credit opportunity for existing homeowners who buy a new home. They will now be granted a maximum $6,500 credit toward their next principal home purchase, if they have lived in their current home for at least five out of the eight past years.
